SIDNEY, Neb. — More than 50 third- through sixth-grade girls are preparing for the start of the Cheyenne County Community Center's youth volleyball season following a two-day skills camp led by the Sidney High School volleyball program.
Sidney coach Ryan Birner and his players worked with participants Aug. 15 and Aug. 22 at The Center, emphasizing skills the young athletes will continue developing as they advance through the sport. The camp concluded Saturday with scrimmages.
"The focus has been on fundamentals — serving and passing," Birner said. "That's what I focus on in high school. We kind of want to build that foundation for these girls as well."
Birner said learning to control the ball and use all three touches were among the skills emphasized during the camp.
"It's just nice to have so many girls that are excited to play at such a young age," Birner said. "We can really take advantage of that when they're in the high school program."
Youth league practices begin Monday, Aug. 24, with matches starting Thursday, Aug. 27. Third- and fourth-grade matches will be played at the Cheyenne County Community Center, while fifth- and sixth-grade matches will be held at West Elementary. League play continues through Sept. 10.
For Birner, who is originally from Sidney, the camp also provided an opportunity to connect the community's youth program with Sidney High School volleyball.
"I just want make myself present and be part of the face of volleyball here in Sidney," Birner said.
Sidney High School opens its season Thursday at home against Sterling.
